The answer is YES. My hair, in fact, is fine but thick. The term fine hair only refers to a small diameter of the hair shaft- Coarse hair is the opposite end of the spectrum with a larger diameter. Hair thickness is determined by how sparse/ dense the hairs on your head are.
I am always annoyed by the assumption that fine hair is thin. Yes, fine hair may look thin when not styled, but it may actually be thick. I highlight my hair and use products to volumize my fine but thick hair- and voila! The thickness of my hair is finally visible.
I decided to take action a couple of months when a co-worker said, "Your hair wouldn’t braid well. Its too thin." Apart from being extremely annoyed with this individual I realized that I was not making the most of my fine but thick hair. In highschool and shortly after my hair was full of body and people often commented on how full it was. I saw red after my co-worker’s comment but became determined to prove her wrong.
At the time- just a few short months ago- I was fixated on healthy hair. I wanted healthy hair and I wanted my hair as close as possible to my natural haircolor- mostly to avoid damage. With this goal I asked my stylist for conservative, natural ultra-conditioning colors. However, years ago I lightened my hair several shades. Lighter hair has always been my preference, especially when my hair is darker or in the summer. Wait… that includes all year round.
I now secretly thank my co-worker for labeling my hair as "thin." The comment propelled me to ask my stylist for more highlights and less conditioning to increase my hair’s volume. The highlights also add a lot of depth. As a result it looks like I have a lot more hair. And I am oh so much happier with my hair! Its gorgeous! Healthy hair is a myth… hair is dead anyway, right?
Fine but thick hair… not so bad, eh?

I’ll have to try this next time I see my hair stylist.
Keep up with the hair tips. They help me break
away from works duldrums.
