Did you know that fine hair breaks a lot easier than other types of hair? The reason is the shaft of fine hair is very small- fractions smaller and much weaker. Its very important for those of us with fine hair to have fine hair knowledge  so we can make the most of our hair!

Perms and highlights are often recommended to increase volume in fine hair. I am all about these methods- I think that highlights HIGHLY increase the thickness and beauty of my fine hair. However even I will admit to the fact that these methods increase risk for damage. The high possibility for breakage makes it seem impossible to fully increase the volume of fine hair!

Fine but Thick Hair: Does it exist?

January 17th, 2008 · 1 Comment

The answer is YES. My hair, in fact, is fine but thick. The term fine hair only refers to a small diameter of the hair shaft- Coarse hair is the opposite end of the spectrum with a larger diameter. Hair thickness is determined by how sparse/ dense the hairs on your head are.

I am always annoyed by the assumption that fine hair is thin. Yes, fine hair may look thin when not styled, but it may actually be thick. I highlight my hair and use products to volumize my fine but thick hair- and voila! The thickness of my hair is finally visible.

I recently switched from Clinique’s moisturizing gel to Aveeno calming moisturizer. Clinique’s moisturizer made my skin red and blotchy after using it for a couple of months. Aveeno’s calming moisturizer eliminated the redness.

I chose an Aveeno moisturizer because I have used Aveeno’s products in the past and loved them. They are more affordable than Clinique’s and work just as well… sometimes better.

Beauty Tips for hair and skin: oil control, fine hair, waves & curls

December 21st, 2007 · 2 Comments

Tip for oily skin: Pull your hair back away from your face, especially while you sleep. If you have fine hair like me the oils travel from your scalp to the face faster than someone with curly hair. To prevent acne I wash my hair daily unless I curl it- then every other day.

Tip for fine hair: For more volume, there’s always the obvious- curlers and perms. Also when I blow dry my hair I brush it up and use a root booster product. I used to hang my head down and blow dry my hair upside down. This method gave my hair body- but in a bad way. My hair puffed into a horrendous mushroom!!! When blow drying for volume, think “up” instead of down.
